Thomas W. Clawson – Of Counsel

Thomas W. “Tom” Clawson brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to MacDonald & Miller Mineral Legal Services, PLLC and serves in an of-counsel capacity.  With a natural resources and environmental law practice extending over 25 years, Tom represents clients in the areas of oil and gas, water, mining, public lands, real estate development and environmental law.  He has prepared more than a hundred mineral title opinions, including division order and drilling, acquisition, financing and unpatented mining claim title opinions.  In addition, Tom regularly represents clients before the Utah Board of Oil, Gas and Mining (“BOGM”), Utah Division of Water Rights, and the United States Interior Board of Land Appeals (“IBLA”), as well as State and Federal courts. In association with other team members, Tom has successfully defended numerous BOGM and lower court decisions before the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, Utah Supreme Court and Utah Court of Appeals.  Additionally, Tom represented a major client before BOGM and the United States Bureau of Land Management, which both approved a 100,000-acre oil and gas waterflood secondary recovery project located in the Uinta Basin in Eastern Utah.

Tom comes to MacDonald & Miller from Fabian VanCott, after twenty-four years at VanCott, Bagley, Cornwall & McCarthy.  He earned his J.D. from the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah in 1990.  Before practicing law, Tom worked for Exxon Co., USA as an exploration geophysicist in Denver, Colorado and Midland, Texas.

Away from the office, Tom enjoys hiking, woodworking, photography and astronomy.
